The cheapest lone worker control and the one most often designed so that a missed check-in means nothing.

Someone says they are all right at agreed intervals. If they do not, someone acts. That is the entire mechanism, and both halves have to work.

Setting the interval
From the hazard, not from convenience.
How long could this person be incapacitated before the delay itself causes harm?
A fall in a plant room: minutes.
A visit to an agitated client: the length of the visit plus a margin.
A driver on a rural round: an hour may be reasonable.
An interval chosen because it suits the office is not a control.
The three ways it fails
Nobody notices the missed check-in, because it goes to a shared inbox or a person who is in a meeting.
Somebody notices and assumes. "She's probably running late" is the sentence that appears in every serious case review.
The worker checks in out of habit while in difficulty, which is why a duress option matters and is covered in its own note.
Designing the response
A missed check-in triggers an action, not a judgement.
Call them. If no answer, call again. If no answer, escalate — with the timings written down and no discretion at the first two steps.
Because discretion at three in the morning is how a ten-minute delay becomes two hours.
And the person acting needs the worker's location and last known plan, which means the schedule has to be visible to them.
Automatic against manual
Manual check-in — a call or a message — works and depends on the worker remembering.
App-based timers prompt and escalate automatically, which removes the memory problem and introduces alert fatigue if the intervals are too short.
Automatic no-movement detection covers the case where the person cannot check in at all, and produces false alarms.
Most operations need a combination, and the combination should follow from the hazard rather than from the product.
The end-of-shift check
The one that is missed most often.
A worker who finishes at nine and is not accounted for until the morning has been alone and unchecked for twelve hours.
Close every shift explicitly, including where the last activity was hours earlier.
The measure
Missed check-ins per month, and what happened to each.
Time from missed check-in to first contact attempt.
And the proportion where the response was an assumption rather than an action, which requires honest recording and is the finding that matters.
Who receives them
A named person, not a shared mailbox.
With a stated coverage window, so it is clear who holds it at any hour.
And a deputy who actually knows they are one, which is worth confirming rather than assuming.
A check-in going to a system nobody watches is the commonest failure in this area, and it is invisible until the day it matters — the log will show the check-in arriving and nothing after it.
Matching the interval to the hazard
Confined space or work at height: minutes, or the task should not be done alone.
Client visit with an aggression history: the expected duration plus fifteen minutes.
Routine home visits: per visit, with arrival and departure.
Driving between sites: hourly, or per leg.
Night security patrol: per patrol point, so a missed one localises the search.
Remote outdoor work: per journey plan, with agreed contact points.
The pattern is that the interval should be shorter than the time in which the delay itself becomes harmful. Anything longer is a record rather than a control.
The duress option
A worker under coercion will check in normally if that is the only option.
Which means the system needs a way to check in that reads as fine and means the opposite: a wrong digit, a particular word, a different button.
Agreed in advance, practised, and known only to the people who need it.
Without it, the check-in is a control against accidents and not against people, which should be stated in the assessment rather than assumed away.
Automation and its limits
An app that prompts and escalates automatically removes the memory problem, which is the largest cause of missed check-ins.
And introduces its own: notifications suppressed by a phone's power saving, a device left in a bag, an expiry during a meeting.
Test the app's behaviour on the actual phones in use, because operating system power management varies and is the commonest technical cause of a silent failure.
Recording and reviewing
Every check-in, every miss, every response and every timing.
Reviewed monthly: how many missed, how quickly noticed, what the cause was.
A pattern of misses from one worker is usually a practical problem — no signal on that round, a device that is awkward to reach — rather than carelessness.
And a pattern of misses at one time of day points at the coverage arrangement rather than at anybody.
The measure that tells you whether it works
Time from a missed check-in to the first contact attempt.
Not the check-in compliance rate, which measures the workers.
The response time measures the system, and it is the one that determines whether a missed check-in means anything at all.
