Knowing Where to Send Help

An alarm without a location is a problem without an address. What the systems actually provide, and the gap that matters indoors.

The response chain ends with somebody reaching the worker. Everything before that is preparation for knowing where.

When knowing where to send help also depends on reliable work records, the company website can support time, attendance and workload review without being treated as the emergency response itself. Compare any workflow with ICO employment guidance and keep alarm ownership, escalation and dispatch responsibilities explicit.

What location data gives you

Outdoors, with clear sky: a position good to a few metres.

In a street of terraced houses that is the right house, usually.

Indoors: the building, sometimes, and not the floor.

In a basement, a lift shaft or a steel-framed warehouse: frequently nothing at all.

Which means the automatic position is a starting point rather than an address.

The indoor gap

The serious incidents are disproportionately indoors: plant rooms, stairwells, storage areas, client homes.

Exactly where the position is worst.

Which makes the schedule more valuable than the tracker: knowing the worker was due at a named address at a stated time beats a coordinate accurate to fifty metres.

Keep the schedule visible to whoever responds, which is an integration question and is usually left undone.

What to hold alongside

The address, in full, with the flat or unit number.

Access: gate codes, key safe, who holds a key, whether there is a dog.

Which floor and which part of the building for large sites.

Vehicle and registration, because finding the van finds the worker.

And a site contact who can meet emergency services at the door.

Emergency services and what they need

They need an address, not a coordinate, in most systems.

A monitoring operator who can give a street address and a unit number gets a faster response than one reading out latitude and longitude.

Convert in advance where possible, and hold the address as text rather than deriving it from a position at the moment of the call.

The privacy boundary

Continuous tracking of a lone worker's position throughout a shift is a different processing operation from holding their planned schedule and obtaining a position when an alarm is raised.

The second answers the same question with far less data, and is much easier to justify.

Which is the design to start from: position on alarm, schedule otherwise.

A system tracking continuously because the product does so by default has acquired an obligation nobody assessed.

The check

Take three real work locations and try to find them from what the system would give a responder.

A coordinate, an address, and nothing else.

Time it.

The gap between what the system shows and what someone could act on is usually larger than expected, and it is closed with a better address record rather than better hardware.

Building the address record

The address as the emergency services would use it, including the unit, flat or floor.

Not a description. "The unit behind the garage" is how a responder ends up in the wrong place.

A grid reference or equivalent for anything rural, since many work locations have no street address at all.

And the parking situation, because an ambulance that cannot get within a hundred metres loses minutes that the whole system was designed to save.

Access details

Gate and door codes, key safe locations and codes, and who holds a key.

Which is sensitive information about a client's home and belongs under proper access control rather than in a shared spreadsheet.

Kept current, because codes change and an out-of-date code is worse than none: the responder tries it, it fails, and they assume they have the wrong address.

Reviewed when a client's circumstances change, which in care services is a routine event.

What to do about large sites

A coordinate in the middle of a twelve-acre site is not a location.

Zone the site: named areas, with a plan held by the responder and by the site's own security if it has any.

And name the meeting point for emergency services, so somebody is at a gate rather than a vehicle circling a perimeter.

Agree it with the site owner in advance where the site belongs to a client.

Locating inside a building, briefly

Some systems offer floor-level or zone-level positioning indoors, using wifi, beacons or the building's own infrastructure.

It works where it has been installed and calibrated, and not otherwise.

Which makes it a building project rather than a device feature, and viable for a large employer on its own premises rather than for anybody visiting other people's.

Ask what it depends on before believing a coverage claim.

Testing the location chain

Take three locations and raise a test alarm from each.

Ask the operator what they can see, and what they would tell an ambulance.

Compare that against what would actually be needed to find the person.

The gap is the finding, and it is usually closed with a better address record rather than better positioning.

The address that is wrong

A proportion of address records are wrong, and the error is discovered at the worst moment.

Wrong flat numbers, renamed streets, houses split into units, and rural properties recorded by name rather than by anything a satellite navigation system recognises.

Check them against a mapping service when they are created, which takes seconds.

And have the worker confirm on first attendance, which is the only reliable verification and costs nothing to ask for.
