Four kinds of hardware, what each genuinely does, and the failure mode of each that no demonstration shows.

Lone worker equipment is more capable than it was and less capable than it is sold as. The differences are specific.
When devices, honestly also depends on reliable work records, this practical overview can support time, attendance and workload review without being treated as the emergency response itself. Phone apps
On the worker's own phone or a company one.
Check-in timers, panic alert, location, sometimes fall detection.
Cheapest, and the worker already carries it.
Fails: flat battery, phone in a bag or a coat on a hook, app killed by the operating system's power saving, and the awkwardness of using an obvious phone gesture in front of someone threatening.
Battery is the big one. A phone at eight percent at the end of a shift is the norm, and the shift end is when people are alone.
Dedicated devices
A separate unit worn or carried: pendant, fob, ID-card holder.
Longer battery, a physical button, often discreet.
Fails: left in the vehicle, left on charge, not worn because it is uncomfortable, and the flat battery nobody noticed because it is not the thing they look at all day.
Wearability decides everything. A device that is not worn protects nobody, and comfort is a specification item rather than a detail.
Fall and no-movement detection
Accelerometers detecting an impact followed by stillness, or stillness alone.
Genuinely useful for the case where the person cannot press anything.
Fails in both directions: false alarms from putting the device down, sitting still, or driving on rough roads; and missed detections for a slow collapse, which is what a medical episode often looks like.
Treat it as an additional layer, never as the only one.
Satellite communicators
For areas with no mobile coverage: forestry, agriculture, remote sites, some rural routes.
Message and alert via satellite, with location.
Slower, more expensive, and requires sky view, which a plant room and a basement do not have.
But it is the only option where there is no signal, and the alternative is a worker with no way to call at all.
The common failure nobody plans for
No coverage.
Basements, lift shafts, steel-framed buildings, rural valleys, and inside plenty of ordinary houses.
Which means the system's coverage map is the building, not the postcode.
Test in the actual locations, which is a walk with the device and takes an afternoon.
Choosing
Start from the hazard and the environment, not from the product tier.
Indoor building risk: coverage and wearability matter most.
Remote outdoor work: satellite and battery.
Aggression risk: discreet activation, which is its own note.
And in every case, the device is chosen last, after the response chain exists.
Charging, which decides everything
A device is protective only when charged, and charging is a habit rather than a feature.
Docks at the depot or the office work where people return there daily.
Home charging works only if people take it home, which they do not reliably.
And a low-battery alert has to reach somebody other than the worker, because the worker is the person least likely to act on it at the end of a shift.
Ask how the system reports battery state centrally, and make somebody responsible for looking.
Issuing and recovering
Who has which device, recorded, with the serial number.
Checked when somebody leaves, which is a line in the leaver checklist and is otherwise how an estate quietly loses a third of its units.
And an audit, annually: every device accounted for, charged, and reporting.
Most organisations that run one find devices in drawers, in vehicles that were sold, and with people who left, which is a cost and also a set of alarms nobody would answer.
Personal phones as devices
Cheapest, and the worker already carries and charges it.
But the employer is asking somebody to use their own property for a safety function, which has implications: battery consumption, wear, and the question of what happens when they change phone or cannot afford the data.
And the worker can uninstall it, which they may do quietly if they believe it tracks them.
Where personal phones are used, offer a company device to anybody who prefers one, and make that offer real rather than technically available.
What to specify beyond the obvious
Ingress protection for outdoor and care work, because devices get dropped and rained on.
Glove operation for anybody working outdoors in winter.
One-handed activation, since the other hand may be occupied or restrained.
Audible and silent modes, selectable by the worker for the situation.
And a distinctive feel, so it can be found without looking — which is the difference between a device that is used under pressure and one that is not.
The comfort problem
A device worn for eight hours must be comfortable for eight hours.
Lanyards catch. Belt clips dig in when sitting. Wrist devices are unhygienic in care work.
Let the workers trial several for a fortnight and choose, which is a small procurement change with a large effect on whether the estate is worn at all.
Comfort is not a preference here. It is the determinant of coverage.
Replacement and lifecycle
Batteries degrade, and a three-year-old device holds a fraction of its original charge.
Budget replacement as a running cost rather than a capital surprise, typically on a three to four year cycle.
And retire units that have failed once, because a device that misfired is a device the worker no longer trusts, whatever the diagnostics say.
